Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah mencari tahu proses dalam meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa melalui metode Start with Simple Stories (SSS) pada kelas tujuh di SMP Muhammadiyah Cilegon tahun akademik 2020/2021 dan mencari tahu hasil dari meningkatnya pemahaman membaca siswa melalui metode Start with Simple Stories (SSS) pada kelas tujuh di SMP Muhammadiyah Cilegon tahun akademik 2020/2021. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan menerapkan Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK). Penelitian ini menggunakan dua siklus, setiap siklus terdiri dari dua pertemuan. Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah guru Bahasa Inggris di SMP Muhammadiyah Cilegon dan murid di kelas 7 A. Data dalam penelitian ini adalah kualitatif dan kuantitatif. Data kualitatif didapat dari pengamatan dan wawancara dengan guru bahasa inggris dan para siswa. Data kuantitatif dikumpulkan dari pre-tes dan post-tes. Para siswa baik dalam memahami tujuan, makna tersirat dan tertulis, antonim dan sinonim. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa terdapat peningkatan dalam pemahaman membaca siswa. Nilai rata-rata pre-tes siswa adalah 48 yang meningkat menjadi 58,6 pada post-tes pertama. Pada pos-tes ke dua, nilai rata-rata siswa adalah 78. Ini menunjukkan bahwa para siswa melampaui nilai KKM yaitu 68. Kesimpulannya, metode Start with Simple Stories (SSS) meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa.

Additional Information: The objectives of this study were to to find out the process of improving students’ reading comprehension through Start with Simple Stories (SSS) method at the seventh grade of SMP Muhammadiyah Cilegon academic year 2020/2021 and to find out the results of improving students’ reading comprehension through Start with Simple Stories (SSS) method at the seventh grade of SMP Muhammadiyah Cilegon academic year 2020/2021. This study was qualitative research method by implementing action research design. This study applied two cycles, each cycle consisted of two meetings. The subjects of this study were English teacher in the seventh grade of SMP Muhammadiyah Cilegon and the students at 7 A class. Qualitative and quantitative were the data in this study. The qualitative data were obtained from observations and interviews with English teacher and students. The quantitative data were collected from pre-test and post-tests. The students were good in understanding the purpose, the implied and written meaning, antonym and the synonym. The result of this study showed that there were improvements of students’ reading comprehension. The pre-test average score was 48 which improved to 58,6 on the first post-test. On the second post-test, the average score was 78. It indicated that the students passed the standard minimum score which has 68. It can be concluded that Start with Simple Stories (SSS) method improved the students’ reading comprehension.
