Abstract

THE USE OF CLT (COMMUNICATIVE LANGUAGE TEACHING) TO IMPROVE STUDENTS' SPEAKING SKILL AT ELEVENTH GRADE OF SMAN 2 KS CILEGON by: Reza Nur Islam 2223150097 ABSTRACT The objectives of this research were to improve students’ speaking skill through CLT (Communicative Language Teaching) at eleventh grade of SMAN 2 KS Cilegon and to describe the process teaching speaking through CLT (Communicative Language Teaching). The research subjects were 36 students of Eleventh Social One of SMAN 2 KS Cilegon. This research was CAR (Classroom Action Research) which was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of three meetings. The data were qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative data was obtained from interviews with students and English teacher, and observations. The quantitative data was collected from pre-test and post-tests. Data analysis revealed that students were more active during the English lesson, students were gained more confidence, students’ pronunciation was improved, students enjoyed studying with fun activities, and students spoke English more frequent than before. The result of this research showed that there were improvements of student’s speaking skill. Students’ total score was improved 26.93 from 49.57 on the pre-test and 76.5 on the first post-test. On the second post-test there was another improvements for 11.74 with average score 87.97. It indicated that the students passed the standard minimum score which was 78. Based on that result, it could be concluded that CLT (Communicative Language Teaching) was proven to improve students’ speaking skill.
