Abstract
Natural zeolite, which was abundantly explored in the Bayah district of the Indonesian province of Banten, has poor quality, particularly in the low Si/Al ratio of 5.08. Therefore, the objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of a simple method for enhancing the Si/Al ratio on the crystalline and morphological features of materials. This method used strong acids (HF 4% and HCl 6%), followed by ion exchange using NH₄Cl, which was then calcined at a temperature of 600 °C. The modified natural zeolites had varying Si/Al ratios between 10.73 and 24.93. Using acidic procedures followed by one-day soaking, the highest ratio of Si/Al is attained. XRD analysis revealed that the phase structure stayed unchanged, but the drop in intensity was due to a decrease in Al concentration and decrystallization. The highest surface area was achieved at 148.1 m²/g. With an increase in the number of micropores or mesopores, the surface area also grows. So, it is very interesting to use this easy way to improve the quality of natural zeolites to meet standards for catalyst quality. Keywords: natural zeolite, dealumination, calcination, Si/Al ratio, micropores.
