Abstract

The objective of the research are to find out whether using the discovery learning model can improving the ability of class X students of SMAN 1 Pandeglang in writing descriptive text. This research using the Collaborative Classroom Action Research method that applied the Discovery Learning model to teach writing descriptive texts. This research use two cycles, each cycle consists of two meetings. The subjects of this research are the English teacher of class X SMAN 3 Pandeglang and 30 students in class XF. Qualitative and quantitative are the data in this study. Qualitative data obtained from observations with English teachers and students. Quantitative data were collected from pre-test and post-test. The process of applying the discovery learning model can be seen from observations, it was found that students were good at generating their ideas, topics in complete and clear text and details related to topics. Students are motivated and interested in actively participating in learning to write.The results of this research showed that there were improvements in students' descriptive texts. The pretest average score was 50.33 which improved to 69.5 on the first post-test. On the second post-test, the average score was 83. This showed that the students passed the minimum standard score of 70. It could be concluded that discovery learning improved students' descriptive text writing skills. Additional Information: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah dengan menggunakan model discovery learning dapat meningkatkan kemampuan siswa kelas X SMAN 1 Pandeglang dalam menulis teks deskriptif. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode Penelitian Tindakan Kelas Kolaboratif yang menerapkan model Discovery Learning untuk mengajar menulis teks deskriptif. Penelitian ini menggunakan dua siklus, setiap siklus terdiri dari dua kali pertemuan. Subyek penelitian ini adalah guru bahasa Inggris kelas X SMAN 3 Pandeglang dan 30 siswa kelas XF. Kualitatif dan kuantitatif merupakan data dalam penelitian ini. Data kualitatif diperoleh dari observasi dengan guru bahasa Inggris dan siswa. Data kuantitatif dikumpulkan dari pre-test dan post-test. Proses penerapan model pembelajaran discovery dapat dilihat dari observasi, ditemukan bahwa siswa pandai dalam memunculkan ide, topik dalam teks lengkap dan jelas serta detail terkait topik. Siswa termotivasi dan tertarik untuk berpartisipasi aktif dalam pembelajaran menulis. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan adanya peningkatan pada teks deskriptif siswa. Nilai rata-rata pretest adalah 50,33 yang meningkat menjadi 69,5 pada post-test pertama. Pada post-test kedua, nilai rata-rata adalah 83. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa siswa lulus nilai standar minimal 70. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa pembelajaran discovery meningkatkan keterampilan menulis teks deskriptif siswa.
