Abstract
The aim of this research is to describe the learning environment at Global Indonesia School in developing English speaking skills at primary level and to know the learning activities and techniques for teaching speaking that are used. The researcher applied the qualitative case study method because the case in this research is about a specific phenomenon and the data was analyzed and described in the form of words and sentences. The participants of this research were the primary level of 17 students and an English teacher at Global Indonesia School. The data was collected through observations and interviews. The result showed that there are four elements of the learning environment. There are the naturalness of the environment, the learner’s role in communication, the availability of concrete referents, and target language models. The researcher found that the learning environment at Global Indonesia School was appropriate to support the development of students’ English-speaking skills. Besides, the learning activities and techniques for teaching speaking that were found were storytelling, roleplay, and small group discussion. The result hopefully will give insight for teachers to more fully consider each of the components to accommodate the technique of speaking English outside and inside the classroom.

Additional Information: | Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan lingkungan belajar di Global Indonesia School dalam mengembangkan keterampilan berbicara bahasa Inggris di tingkat dasar dan untuk mengetahui kegiatan pembelajaran dan teknik pengajaran berbicara yang digunakan. Peneliti menerapkan metode studi kasus kualitatif karena kasus dalam penelitian ini adalah tentang fenomena tertentu dan datanya dianalisis dan dideskripsikan dalam bentuk kata-kata dan kalimat. Partisipan dari penelitian ini adalah siswa tingkat SD sebanyak 17 orang dan seorang guru bahasa Inggris di Global Indonesia School. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui observasi dan wawancara. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada empat unsur lingkungan belajar. Ada kealamian lingkungan, peran pembelajar dalam komunikasi, ketersediaan referensi konkret, dan model bahasa sasaran. Peneliti menemukan bahwa lingkungan belajar di Global Indonesia School cocok untuk mendukung pengembangan keterampilan berbicara bahasa Inggris siswa. Selain itu, kegiatan pembelajaran dan teknik pengajaran berbicara yang ditemukan adalah mendongeng, bermain peran, dan diskusi kelompok kecil. Hasilnya diharapkan dapat memberikan wawasan bagi guru untuk lebih mempertimbangkan setiap komponen untuk mengakomodasi teknik berbicara bahasa Inggris di luar dan di dalam kelas. | |||||||||
