Abstract
The objective of this research was to find out the effectiveness of using the direct method toward students’ speaking ability at ninth grade of Bani Adung Islamic Boarding School. The research used quantitative research method. The resercher used true experimental design as research method. There were two groups used in this research. The samples were selected by using cluster random sampling technique. The sample of this research were students of Bani Adung Islamic Boarding School, 52 students selected for the experimental and control group. The 26 students class IX A were selected as the experiment group and the 26 students of class IX B as control group. The data were collected by using pre-test and post-test. Then, the post-test of both groups would be compared to find out the effectiveness of using direct method as a method in teaching speaking skill. The researcher found that the result tcount was 21.53. Then, the degree of freedom was 0,05 and the ttable for df= 2.056. The tcount was higher than ttable or 21.53 > 2.056. It means that Ha was accepted and the null hypothesis was rejected. It could be concluded that the use of the direct method was effective to improve students’ speaking ability. Thus, the use direct method in class in teaching speaking skill was highly encouraged.
