Abstract

The objectives of this research were to analyze what are the types of code switching and code mixing used by students of English Education Department UNTIRTA, and to investigate the reason of the students of English Education Department used code switching and code mixing in their daily communication. This research was used descriptive qualitative method which recording, interview and field notes as data collection technique. The result of this research showed that 56,52% code switching occured in students’daily communication, while for the code mixing occured 44,92%. The reason of students used code mixing and code switching was defined by the type of code switching and code mixing they used. From the result students were used 4 reasons of using code switching and code mixing, they are: (1) Talking about a particular topic (2) Interjection (3) Repetition used for clarification (4) Because oflexical need.
