Abstract

ABSTRACT The aim of this research was to investigate the process of using simple stories in improving students vocabulary and improvements of students vocabulary through simple stories. The research design employed in this research was Classroom Action Research which consisted of four main steps: planning, acting,observing, and reflecting, sonduted in two cycles. The study was conduted at eighth grade of SMP YP 17-1 Kota Serang which consisted of 41 students. Observation sheet, documentation, pre-test and post-test were used as instrument to collect the data. The rasearch wa considered succesful if the deggree of the students vocabulary score throughout the implementation achieved Minimum Mastering Criteria (MMC) or Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal (KKM): it was 70. Teh findings of the research showed that learning by using simple stories could improve students vocabulary ability. In the first cycle, the student still did not reach Miniimum Mastering Criteria (MMC) or Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal (KKM), while in cycle 2, all of the students were be able to reach MMC . The improvement between pre-test and the result of test in cycle one is 18,7% . The percentage of the improvement form the result of test in sycle two is 10,8%. It can be inferred, that learning by using simple stories could improve the students vocabulary ability. It can be seen from students score improvement in their vocabulary composition. It is finally suggested that the teacher may use simple stories in teaching vocabulary learning. the other rescarchers were invited to conduct further research based on the findings of this study to develop better method in the teaching of vocabulary.
