Abstract

This study focuses on politeness strategy used by students in requesting toward the lecturers in sixth semester of English department of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa State University using on Brown and Levinson (1987) theory. Students at sixth semester are considered as an appropriate semester because of several reasons such as they do the interaction with lecturers more often becuase of their necessities regarding to their study. This research only concerned on the utterances of requesting to every lecturer in every condition whether it was outside or inside classroom interaction. The aims of this research are to know the politeness strategy of students’ request and most of politeness strategy that used by the students including the reason of using it because they should know how to utter the appropriate utterances when they want to delivering request especially toward their lecturers. The data took by DCT (Discourse Completion Test) and interview. The participants consisted of 30 students from all students at sixth semester in the data collected uotside the learning process by filled DCT. Five students has been conducted the interview for knowing the reason of the way they requestin toward lecturers. From the analysis of the research, the researcher found several types of politeness strategies regarding of Brown and Levinson (1987) theory, there are bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record. From DCT, negative politeness strategy is dominant strategy that used by the students’ request toward the lecturers, it was 37%.
