Abstract

Penelitian ini menguji keefektifan penggunaan gambar dalam meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam menulis paragraf deskriptif, serta tanggapan mereka terhadap kegiatan menulis. Lima puluh siswa kelas delapan SMP Negeri 1 Pontang berpartisipasi dalam penelitian ini, dimana partisipan dibagi menjadi dua kelompok; kelompok eksperimen dan kontrol. Penelitian ini menerapkan kuasi eksperimen desain sebagai metode penelitian. Data diperoleh dari beberapa instrumen, yaitu tes dan observasi kelas yang kemudian dianalisis menggunakan tulisan kriteria penilaian (isi, organisasi, fitur bahasa dan mekanik). Itu Temuan mengungkapkan bahwa pengajaran menulis paragraf deskriptif melalui gambar berhasil meningkatkan kemampuan menulis paragraf deskriptif siswa. Data dikumpulkan menggunakan tes esai dan dianalisis dengan menggunakan SPSS versi 16 for jendela. Analisis data menunjukkan bahwa ada perbedaan yang signifikan antara nilai rata-rata post-test dan pre-test di kelas eksperimen (5,521>1,970). Sehingga hipotesis nol ditolak dan hipotesis alternatif diterima. Selain itu, data dari observasi menunjukkan beberapa manfaat menggunakan gambar. Ini termasuk: (1) meningkatkan motivasi siswa untuk berpartisipasi aktif di kelas menulis; (2) gambar mudah disiapkan, mudah diatur, menarik, bermakna, dan autentik. Berdasarkan temuan tersebut, direkomendasikan agar gambar dapat diterapkan dalam pengajaran menulis.

Additional Information: This study examines the effectiveness of using pictures in improving students’ ability in descriptive paragraph writing, as well as their responses to the writing activity. Fifty students at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 1 Pontang participated in this study, in which the participant were divided into two groups; experimental and control group. This study implemented quasi experimental design as the research method. The data were obtained from several instruments, namely test and class observation which were then analyzed using writing assessment criteria (content, organization, language features and mechanics). The findings revealed that the teaching descriptive paragraph writing through pictures was successful to improve students descriptive paragraph writing ability. The data have been collected using essay test and analyzed by using SPSS version 16 for Windows. The data analysis shows that there was a significant difference between mean score of post-test and pre-test in experimental class(5.521>1.970). So, the null hypothesis is rejected and alternative hypothesis is accepted. Moreover, the data from observation showed some benefits of using pictures. These include: (1) increasing students’ motivation to participate actively in the writing class; (2) pictures being easy to prepare, easy to organize, being interesting, meaningful and authentic. Based on those findings, it is recommended that pictures can be implemented in teaching writing.
