Abstract

Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui hubungan antara frekuensi siswa menonton film subtitle bahasa Inggris dan kosa kata mereka penguasaan mahasiswa jurusan bahasa inggris semester dua di Sultan Ageng Universitas Tirtayasa pada tahun ajaran 2014/2015. Penelitian ini tidak eksperimental dan menggunakan desain penelitian korelasional. Sampel terdiri dari 45 siswa. Instrumen penelitian berupa angket dan tes. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan analisis statistik korelasi Cresswell. Berdasarkan hasil, kedua mahasiswa jurusan Bahasa Inggris semester di Universitas Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa terutama siswa kelas 2A dan 2B terkadang menonton subtitle bahasa Inggris film di luar kelas, bahkan ada yang mengulang untuk menontonnya. Mereka punya frekuensi sedang menonton film subtitle bahasa Inggris dan mereka bagus penguasaan kosakata. Hal ini ditunjukkan dengan skor rata-rata frekuensi menonton film subtitle bahasa Inggris yaitu 57,06 dan skor rata-rata penguasaan kosakata adalah 79,77. Hasil rxy adalah 0,414, maka korelasi kedua variabel tersebut dikategorikan sebagai korelasi sedang. Selanjutnya, nilai thitung (2,98) lebih tinggi dari ttabel (2,021), sehingga Hipotesis Alternatif (Ha) diterima dan Hipotesis Null (Ho) ditolak. Artinya ada pengaruh yang signifikan hubungan antara frekuensi siswa menonton film subtitle bahasa Inggris dan penguasaan kosakata mereka. Selain itu, dari perhitungan koefisien tekad terlihat bahwa frekuensi menonton film subtitle bahasa Inggris kontribusi 17,13% dalam penguasaan kosakata siswa dan lainnya 82,87% adalah disumbangkan oleh faktor lain. Akhirnya, peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa menonton Film subtitle bahasa Inggris bisa menjadi media alternatif untuk meningkatkan siswa‟ penguasaan kosakata

Additional Information: The research was conducted in order to find out the correlation between students‟ frequency of watching English subtitled movie and their vocabulary mastery of second semester English department students at Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University in the academic year 2014/2015. The research was non experimental and used correlational research design. The sample consisted of 45 students. The research instruments were questionnaire and test. The data analyzed by using correlation statistical analysis by Cresswell. Based on the result, second semester English Department students at Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University especially the students of class 2A and 2B sometimes watched English subtitled movies outside the class, even some of them repeated to watch it. They had medium frequency of watching English subtitled movie and they had good mastery of vocabulary. It was shown by the average score of frequency of watching English subtitled movie which was 57.06 and the average score of vocabulary mastery was 79.77. The result of rxy was 0.414, so the correlation of both variables categorized as moderate correlation. Furthermore, the value of tcount (2.98) was higher than ttable (2.021), so Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and Null Hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. It meant that there was a significant correlation between students‟ frequency of watching English subtitled movie and their vocabulary mastery. In addition, from the calculation of coefficient determination seen that frequency of watching English subtitled movie contributed 17.13% in students‟ vocabulary mastery and other 82.87% was contributed by other factors. Finally, the researcher concluded that watching English subtitled movie could be alternative media to improve students‟ vocabulary mastery.
