Abstract

ABSTRACT APRIANI. 2014. Catch Composition of Drift Gillnet in Karangantu Archipelagic Fishing Port Serang Banten. Supervised by RIRIN IRNAWATI and ADI SUSANTO. Karangantu Archipelagic Fishing Port (AFP) has important role such as the center of capture fisheries in Banten Province with high productivity and drift gillnet is a dominant fishing gear. Catch composition is one of the interesting research topics. The objectives of this research are (1) to determine specification of gillnet fishing unit, (2) to describe fishing method and fishing ground of gillnet, and (3) to analyze catch composition of gillnet. The descriptive analysis method was used in this study, as well as the distribution of length and weight of the catch. The results showed that fishing fleet of gillnet has length 9.00 m, breadth 2.30 m, and depth 0.92 m. The engine power is Dongfeng 20 HP. Gillnet has length 51 m, width 5 m, mesh size 2 inches, large buoys, small buoys, head rope with length 20,88 m and marking buoys. Gillnet was operated by 5 peoples consist of one captain and 4 crews. Fishing method of gillnet consists of 3 steps namely: setting, drifting and hauling. The fishing ground were at Tunda Island, Ampel Island and Sunda Strait. The catch composition consisted of 18 species, dominated by indian mackerel (Rastrelliger sp. 53%) as the target catch. By-catch about 47% such as eastern little tuna (Auxis sp. 20,43%), red snappers (Lutjanus sp. 17,15%), scads (Decapterus sp.14,96%), dorab wolf-herring (Chirocentrus sp. 9,48%), trevallies (Selaroides sp. 8,39%), bigeye scad (Selar sp. 7,66%), torpedo scad (Megalaspis sp. 6,20%), pony fish (Leiognathus sp. 4,37) barracuda (Sphyraena sp. 3,64%) about 7,72 % and other.
