Abstract

Water hyacinth has a relatively high cellulose content, cellulose content in the stem reaches 66.6% and amounted to 53.3% of the leaves, so it can be used as an alternative raw material pulping. Pulp quality could be improved by bleaching process using H 2 O 2 because this compound is environmentally friendly and produces high whiteness. The purpose of this research is analyzing the brightness of the pulp produced by the organosolv process using hidrogen peroxide (H 2 ) as bleaching agent and determine the optimum conditions pulp bleaching process. The research phase includes preparation of raw materials hyacinth, pulping, pulp bleaching process, determination of kappa and brightness level test of pulp. Analysis of the data in this research conducted by calculating kappa then using a brightness elepro to know % L*, a*, b*, and % brightness of sample (pulp) of each of the various concentrations of H 2 O 2 2%, 4% and 8 %, as well as the variation of time 60 minutes, 90 minutes, 120 minutes and 150 minutes. The optimum condition bleaching process resulted in the concentration of H 2 O 2 8% and the bleaching time 120 minutes with value L* = 74,61%, a* = -0,91, b* = 10,07, brightness = 62,45% and kappa = 4,5.
