Abstract

The research was determined the effect of population density of snails (Pomacea sp.) and varieties on the growth and yield of rice (Oryza sativa L.). This research conducted an experimental study in Pabuaran Bojong Catang Tunjung Teja Serang Banten, from June until September 2014 with used Randomized Completely Block Design (RCBD) as factorial with three repetation. The factors examined included snails population (K) namely: without snails (K0), 2 snails / plot (K1), 4 snails / plot (K2), and 6 snails / plot (K3), and varieties (V), namely: Ciherang (V1) and Mekongga (V2). The parameters observed include: plant height, percentage of attacks Pomacea sp., The number of groups of eggs, number of panicles, number of grains per panicle, weight of dry grain harvest (DGH), and the weight of dry milled grain (DMG). The results showed that the population density of snails significant effect on the percentage of snails attack at age 3 to 15 DAP (average high of 70% at the age of 12 DAP) and the number of eggs in the age group 12 to 28 DAP (The highest average is 4.83 in the age group 28 DAP). But the population density of snails (Pomacea sp.) Are high, K3 (6 snails / plot) has a high destructive force and capable of lowering the yield of the rice plant (Oryza sativa L.). But the use of varieties showed no significant effect on all parameters of observation. The usage of different varieties produce growth and yield of rice (Oryza sativa L.) differently, especially Mekongga varieties that give real effect and showed a higher yield when compared with Ciherang. There was no interaction between population density of snails (Pomacea sp.) and varieties on the growth and yield of rice (Oryza sativa L.). Key words : golden snail, rice varieties.
