Abstract

The research is motivated that learning mathematics that exists today is less varied in terms of acceptance of the subject matter presented only with a teacher-centered learning, and almost most of students still lack the ability of understanding mathematical concepts. The students are expected to actively actually learn the skills associate real objects/concrete according to the study. The use of the approach is to determine the application of RME approach in terms of improving the ability of students' understanding of mathematical concepts. This research is a quasi-experimental design with nonequivalent control group design. The population studied were all students of class V SDN Ketileng II Cilegon which consists of 2 classes of the school year 2015/2016. While the sample using purposive sampling. With VA class an experimental class that gets RME learning approaches and VB as a control class that gets learning expository approach. The instrument used in this study were non-test instruments and test instruments. The results showed that there were differences increased ability of understanding mathematical concepts that students taught with RME approach with the ability of understanding mathematical concepts the students who use the expository approach and improved the ability of understanding mathematical concepts of students with learning using a RME approach is better than the students who use the learning with expository approach. This means, learning mathematics with RME approach provides students with a good learning activities to improve students' understanding of mathematical concepts.
