Abstract

The objective of this research was to identify the students problem at eight grade of SMPN 10 Kota Serang in writing recount text and to know what type of errors made by them and also to analyze why the students made an error when they write recount text. The research methodology of this research was qualitative. It described the error analysis based in the data through investigating documents and students’ interview. The subject of this research were data of students’ worksheet at eight grade. The collected data were identified, clssified, and analyzed based on the types of error using Dulay’s theory. The result of this research showed that based on the surface strategy taxonomy , the students tended to make errors in form of omission (10=23.26%), in the form addition (9=20.93%), in the form of misformation (23=53.49%) and in the form of misordering (1=2.32%) out of he total errors (43 errors). The reason why they made errors was because of the student lack of information about text organization in recount text, influnced of their mother language and also English grammatical rules mastery. In this research, both of causes, interlingual and intralingual affected the students while they wite a recount text. The researcher also concluded that the errors were overgeneralization, ignorance of rule restriction, incomplete application of rules and false cocept hypothesized. Thus, the causes tended to be related to the differences of the structural verb-forms between English and their native language because they might make the students difficult o understand past tense and the complexity of the target language tended to make it more difficult to be learned.
