Abstract

Objective of the research was to investigate English teacher’s problem in implementing scientific approach for teaching descriptive writing and to investigate the causes of the problem in implementing scientific approach for teaching descriptive writing. The research was conducted in MTs.N.1 Cilegon, SMP.YP.Fatahillah Cilegon, and MTs.Al-Khairiyah Delingseng on the second semester of 2015/2016 academic year by applying case study research method which used interview, questionnaire, and documentation in collecting the data. The sample of the research were three seventh grade English teacher for interview and 88 students of VII B for completing the questionnaire. The students had been taken from 36 students of MTs.N.1 Cilegon, 30 students of SMP.YP.Fatahillah Cilegon, and 22 students of MTs.Al-Khairiyah Delingseng. As the result, the researcher found that the English teachers actually faced the problem in implementing SA for teaching descriptive writing. The problems were the low student’s vocabulary, the lack of student’s confidence, the student’s attitude which was dominant rejecting before learning, the lack of facilities, the lack of time allocation for teaching, the lack of student’s preparation before learning such as to bring dictionary. These problems can be caused by several factors. The researcher divided the factor of cause into two factors; internal factor and external factor. Internally, the problems occurred because the worse of student’s mindset for learning English, the lack of student’s habit for read and exercise, the low student’s motivation, and the lack of student’s awareness to bring dictionary before learning. Meanwhile, externally, the problems occurred because the lack of family’s support and control for the student’s activity at home, the lack of cost to provide the complete facility, and the low teacher’s quality in teaching English.
