Abstract
The use of coconut shell can be improved by make it as raw material in the manufacture of activated carbon which can be used as adsorbent in the refining process of cooking oil. The purpose of this study is to characterize the activated carbon coconut shell product according to Standard Industrial Indonesia No.025879 include volatile substance, moisture content, ash content, and the levels of bound carbon and determine the effect of particle size of the activated carbon to adsorption process refining cooking oil. Research methods include the manufacture and test of activated carbon using electric furnace and analysis on the acid number of cooking oil before and after adsorption. Best results are obtained on activated carbon with particle size 80 mesh at concentration of 8% phosphoric acid with volatile substance content of 2.9%, moisture content 1%, ash content of 0.34%, and the bound carbon content 96.7% and a decrease in acid number becomes 0,56 mg KOH /g. The ratio of the surface area of activated carbon before activation is 46.247 m 2 / g and after activation is 61.821 m /g. Keyword : activated carbon, refined cooking oil, acid number
