Abstract

Nowadays polystirene foam often used as food packaging, thus increasing the amount of polystyrene foam waste. One of method to reduce of polystyrene foam waste is to change it into polystyrene latex. Production of Polystirene latex using polystyrene foam by adding surfactant methyl ester sulfonate anionic emulsifier. This research do to make polystyrene latex by adding surfactants, determine optimum condition in addition of surfactant as emulsifier and determine physical properties of polystyrene latex. Producing polystyrene latex do by dissolving Styrofoam (polystyrene foam) in toluene with ratio 70:30. Then polystyrene solution mixed with aquades, with ration (V/V) 90:10, 70:30, 50:50. After that adding 10 ml of methyl ester sulfonate in concentration variations are 1%, 2.5%, and 5%. The methods to know about physical properties of polystyrene latex do by stability analysis during storage by measuring density ,pH and stability. The density analysis result of 5% methyl ester sulfonate is 0.965 gr/ml in 3 days storage. It showed that the adhesive is stabil. The pH analysis result showed that pH value of polystyrene latex is 6.14. this showed that the storability of adhesive has not long enough and fast of gluing time. The result showed that polystyrene latex is an adhesive. This adhesive can be glued to the paper, wood and shoe materials. Keywords : Polystyrene foam, emulsifier, polystyrene latex, adhesive.
