Abstract

The objective of this research was to find the effectiveness of small group discussion toward students’ reading comprehension at eighth grade of Mts Al�Jauharotunnaqiyah Buah Gede Puloampel 2015/2016 academic year. The subject consisted of two classes mainly A and B class at the second semester. The researcher used quantitative research method. It was true experimental design as research method. The researcher had two group random sampling mainly control class and experimental class. The samples of this research were students of Mts Al-Jauharotunnaqiyah Buah Gede, 46 students selected for the experimental and control group. The 23 students of class VIII/A were selected as the experimental group and the 23 students of calss VIII/B as control group. Through the procedures of the true experimental design : rendom of the subjects, pre-test and post-test. The result of the research show that there is effective of small group discussion (SGD) as technique in teaching reading comprehension. Most students at eighth grade of Mts. Al-Jauharotunnaqiyah Buah Gede Puloampel achived good score in the post-test. The finding of this research to the test, there were pre�test and post-test. The average score of pre-test from the experimental class was 66 and the control class was 54,5. And the average score of post-test from experimental class was 86,9 and the control class was 76,9. Related to the result of the research showed that small group discussion (SGD) is effective as technique toward students’ reading comprehension. The researcher found that the result tcount was 5.444. Then, the degree of freedom was 44 and the ttable for df=44 is 2.015. The tcount is higher than ttable or 5.444 > 2.015. It means that Ha is accepted and the null hypothesis is rejected. And could be concluded that the use of small group discussion is effective toward students’ reading comprehension.
