Abstract

The aim of this study is to describe the process of using mind mapping technique in improving students’ writing ability in descriptive text at the eighth grade of SMPN 4 Pandeglang and to know the students’ improvement of using mind mapping technique in writing descriptive text at the eighth grade of SMPN 4 Pandeglang. The subjects of this study were 32 students. The writer used Classroom Action Research as a method in this study which is adopted from Kurt Lewins’ design. The study was conducted in two cycles and three meeting in each cycle. The data collection techniques used in this study includes some points; observation, test, and documentation. The real teacher (observer) observed the teaching and learning process in observing class situation, students’ attitude, and teacher (writer) performance, the test was done by the students in three times, and documentation is some photos which were taken during the implementation by the observer. In addition, the result of observation indicates that the class condition during teaching learning process was quite good. The students become highly motivated and creative in learning writing descriptive text. Besides, the quantitative data was getting from pre-test and post-test. It is used to know the students improvement in writing descriptive text. The result shows that there was improvement of the students’ achievement in writing descriptive text. Most of students gradually gained good scores at the end of each cycle. The score of Minimum Mastery Criterion-Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal (KKM) of English lesson was 75 (seventy five). Students mean score in preliminary study was 56.09, mean score in post-test 1 was 67.12, and mean score in post-test 2 was 80.04. In conclusion, Mind Mapping can improve students’ descriptive writing ability.
