Abstract

The objective of this research is aimed to know whether there is influence of using Interactive Compensatory Model of Learning (ICML) toward students’ reading comprehension on narrative text. The Interactive Compensatory Model of Learning (ICML) is learning model that combines activation prior knowledge, cognitive abilities, learning strategies, metacognition abilities, and motivational beliefs. The methodology of this research is quantitative approach that is dealing with true experimental design which consist of experimental and contol classes. This research was undertaken at SMPN 3 Balaraja. The population of this research is the eighth grade students which consist of 289 students. The samples of this research are VIII C as the experimental class, and VIII A as the control class. The researcher collected the data by conducting pre-test and post-test. The result of this research shows that the using of ICML gives influence toward students’ reading comprehension on narrative text. It is proved by the improvement of student’s mean score. The mean score of pre-test in experimental and control classes were 48,9 and 52,9, while the mean score of post-test in experimental and control classes were 72,4 and 60,7. Eventually, the experimental class shows better improvement. Furthermore, the result of t-test (tcount) is 3,15. Compared to the value of tcount with the degree of significance 5% (1,673), 3,15 > 1,672, it is proved that the alternative hypothesis is accepted and the null hypothesis is rejected. In addition, the students in experimental class also enjoyed the ICML process. They followed the learning process well, which finally they got better understanding in reading comprehension.
