Abstract

The research objectives were to investigate the occurrance of nonverbal communication in academic presentation and to analyze the functions of nonverbal communciation in academic presentation at English Department, Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University. The research was conducted on July 08, 2015, in academic presentation of sixth semester students of English Department who took Seminar on ELT subject that obliged them to conduct academic presentation in their short semester. The researcher used qualitative method by observing and analyzing the students’ academic presentation. Nonverbal comunication for this research refers to academic presentation proposed by Brown (2000:262), this research found that kinesics, eye contact, proxemics and artifacts occurred in academic presentation. Kinesics was the most used nonverbal communication. Otherwise, kinesthetic and olfactory dimension did not occur in academic presentation. Furthermore, based on the functions of nonverbal communication proposed by Pearson et al, the research found that complementing, emphasizing, repeating, regulating, substituting, and contradicting appeared in both classes with different percentage. The function that used often by the students was complementing. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that kinesics and complementing was the most used type and function of nonverbal communication in their academic presentation.
