Abstract

Soft magnet was investigated from steel processing waste by powder metallurgy method. The basic materials from hot rolling (mill scale) process and waste processing nickel pig iron were crushed and sieved in 50, 100, and 200 mesh, at calcination temperature of 900 0 C and 1000 0 C for 1 hour and then tested XRF and XRD to showed materials and phase . The results of XRF and XRD showed mill scale Fe 2 O 3 , formed a single phase at temperature of 900 0 C and 1000 C with Fe around 98%, while pig iron phase MgSiO 3 and Fe 2 O with Fe, Si and Mg around 80%. Then mixed with 3% wt poly (vinyl butyral) and sintered 1250 3 C for 1 hour. Characterization measured of physical properties that include true density, bulk density and porosity, microstructure analysis using optical microscopy (OM) and magnetic properties using the VSM. The test results, mill scale material has a true density maximum of 5.11 g / cm3, a maximum bulk density of 4.80 g / cm3, a maximum porosity of 22.47% with an average pore 2.07 to 4.11 µm. Waste material processing true nickel pig iron has a maximum density of 3.34 g / cm3, a maximum bulk density of 3.25 g / cm3, porosity up to 31.07%, with an average pore 3.10 to 3.58 µm. Results VSM pig iron mill scale and indicates the optimum conditions in the calcination 900 0 C which has sintering 1250 0 C, mill scale have values Hc = 1153 Oe, Br = 23 Gauss, Bs = 57 Gauss and pig iron have values Hc = 75.04 Oe, Br = 65.61 Gauss , Bs = 358.32 Gauss.
