Abstract

The aim of this research was to describe the process of improving students’ vocabulary mastery through climbing up a ladder game to find out the improvement of students vocabulary through climbing up a ladder game of eighth year students in SMPN 5 Cilegon. In this research there were two problems tried to be answered, i.e. the process of improving climbing up a ladder game and the result of improving climbing up a ladder game in vocabulary mastery. The subject of this research was VIII-I in SMPN 5 Cilegon. The researcher used Classroom Action Research (CAR) as a research methodology. This research was conducted in two cycles which consisted of two meetings in every cycle. The researcher used pre test and post test to collect the quantitative data. Meanwhile, the researcher used observation sheet, and documentation to collect the qualitative data. By using climbing up a ladder game in teaching learning process that it could be increased students motivation, and improved their vocabulary mastery. Climbing up a ladder game was such a way to make the class more active so the students could be a good participant. They also could improve their vocabulary itself. It could be seen in result of test. The researcher used pre test before applying the treatment to measure the students’ ability. For the average of pre test was 68,00. In following to cycle 1, the result of post test 1 was 77,69. Meanwhile, for the cycle 2, the result of post test 2 was 83,58. The researcher found that the students got an improvement in vocabulary mastery. The students could pass the minimum score in the school, it was 75. In conclusion, students’ vocabulary mastery can be improved by climbing up a ladder game. Keyword: Classroom Action Research, Climbing Up A Ladder Game, Vocabulary Mastery
