Abstract

The objectives of this research were to find out the process and the result of improving students’ report writing ability through semantic mapping technique at the ninth grade of SMPN 2 Pulosari. Students faced problem in writing report text. The problems were: students faced difficulties to develop their writing idea; students were difficult to give appropriate detail to describe their topic; students still made mistakes in arranging sentence. Within writing report text, students need to analyze or observe the topic before they write as they have to present factual information about the topic. Semantic mapping technique was chosen to help students in writing report text and to facilitate them to observe and analyze their writing topic in prewriting stage. This research paper used classroom action research as research methodology. This research was done in two cycles which consisted of two meetings for each cycle. The instruments used in collecting the data were test, observation, and documentation. The process of implementing semantic mapping technique in prewriting stage to generate students’ idea could run well. Students wrote report text based on their semantic mapping diagram, and then revised and edited it based on the feedback given. The students were interested in teaching learning process and motivated to write. The result of this study showed that implementation of semantic mapping in prewriting stage had given improvement of students’ report writing ability. The result showed that in pre-test, the average score was 55.46, while in the first post-test the score improved to 74.16, and in the second post-test the score became 84.09. It can be concluded that semantic mapping technique can be used to improve students report writing ability. Keywords: writing, report text, semantic mapping, technique.
