Abstract

The objectives of the research were to describe the process of teaching reading comprehension and to find out the improvement of students’ reading comprehension on recount text through Schema Activation Strategy (SAS) at the eighth grade students of SMPN 18 Kota Serang. The subject of this research was one class of eighth grade students that consisted of 36 students. The researcher used Classroom Action Research (CAR) as research methodology. This research was conducted in two cycles which each cycle consisted of three meetings. The researcher used pre-test and post test to collect quantitative data. Meanwhile the researcher used observation sheet and documentation to collect qualitative data. The students’ average score of pre-test was 54,72. In the first cycle, the students’ average score of post test 1 was 68,17. Whereas, In the second cycle, the students’ average score of post test 2 was 75,86. The researcher found that the students got an improvement in reading comprehension. In conclusion, Schema Activation Strategy (SAS) as learning strategy can improve students’ average score in reading comprehension at eighth grade students of SMPN 18 Kota Serang.
