Abstract

ABSTRACT Euis Yunia Nurbania. 231120126. The Use of I-CHAT Media in Improving Vocabulary Mastery and Motivation to Learn in First Grade Students with Hearing Impairment of Sekolah Khusus Negeri 01 Lebak. Thesis.Technology of Learning Program. Graduate. University of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa. 2013. The objective of this research to improve vocabulary mastery and learning motivation of students. Besides that, this research aims to encourage teacher to use I-CHAT media in the learning activities.The research was conducted in October to December 2013. Using classroom action research method, this research was conducted through two cycles to the three students with hearing impairment. The data collection techniques were data monitoring using observation and data evaluation using test. The data were analyzed using descriptive quantitative technique.The result of the research found that the use of I-CHAT media can improve the ability of vocabulary mastery and motivation to learn of students with hearing impairment. This is shown by the following results: in the pre-observation, the post-test average is 33,3. In the first cycle of the second meeting, the post-test average is 70. In the first cycle of third meeting, the post-test averaged by 78,3. Meanwhile in the second cycle, the post-test average is 80. The observation of students activities resulted in the following data: in the initial condition or preobservation, students’ activities value has insufficient average. Furthermore, the average students’ activities values in the first cycle of first and second meetings are active. In the first cycle of third meeting, the average value is very active. The average students’ activities value is also very active in the second cycle. The conclusion is that the use of I-CHAT media can improve the ability of vocabulary mastery and motivation to learn of first grade students with hearing impairment. Meanwhile, the implication and recommendation in improving students’ vocabulary mastery and motivation to learn is that I-CHAT media need to be developed with other materials and methods; I-CHAT media facilitate the students to remember in the long term because it’s very interesting, and is not the only mediain learning. Therefore, teachers should use various media, so that children do not get bored. Keywords: I-CHAT media, vocabulary mastery, motivation to learn, students with hearing impairment
