Abstract

The aimed of this research is describing the process of teaching reading comprehension in narrative text and to know the improvement of students’ reading comprehension in narrative text through story mapping at the eighth grade of SMPN 14 Kota Serang. The subject of this research was 40 students in class VIIIF of SMPN 14 Kota Serang. This research used Class Action Research (CAR). There are two cycle of CAR in the process of teaching reading comprehension of narrative text through story mapping. In each cycles the researcher did activity based on the concept of CAR: planning, acting, observing and reflecting. While doing CAR, the researcher collaborated with the English teacher in observing the research and to know the process of teaching reading comprehension. In the process of teaching reading comprehension of narrative text, the students looked enthusiastic and more enjoyed in doing reading activity. And most of them said that using the story mapping strategy is makes them more easily to comprehend the text. The researcher asked the students to do a post-test in each cycles to know the improvement of students’ score in reading comprehension test. The improvement of reading comprehension test showed that the result of pre-test and post-test showed the significant improvement. The Minimal Level Criterion (KKM) in SMPN 14 Kota Serang was 75. The average score of students’ pre-test was 52.75 and there were only 6 of students (15%) who passed KKM. The average score of students’ post-test I was 68.37 and there were 19 students (47.5%) who passed KKM. The average score of students’ post-test II was 83.62 and there were 35 students (87.5%) who passed KKM. It means the criteria of success were achieved. In conclusions, the students’ reading comprehension in narrative text has improved and the students were interested in reading comprehension in narrative text through story mapping.
